What is the Wayback Machine API?
Archived web pages from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine: a URL's content at any moment, its captures, and capture history.
Wayback Machine API is available on the JoJ API marketplace. Subscribe with a single JoJ API key, call it through one gateway, and pay from one wallet — no separate account or contract with the provider.
Wayback Machine API endpoints
- GET
/v1/contentArchived content
The archived copy of a URL closest to the given moment, as the Wayback Machine stored it. On success the HTTP status is 200 and the archived page's own HTTP status when it was crawled is `status_code` in the body (for example 200, or 403 for a page that was forbidden at crawl time); `date` and `location` name the capture that was returned, and binary files come back as text with one character per byte. When the URL has no capture the status is 404 (`not_archived`); when the URL is excluded from the Wayback Machine it is 403 (`url_excluded`); when the archive cannot be reached it is 503.
- GET
/v1/capturesCaptures of a day
Every capture of a URL on one day, with its time, the status the page answered and the collections it belongs to.
- GET
/v1/calendarCaptures per day
The number of captures of a URL on each day of a year or a month, with the status the page answered.
- GET
/v1/sparklineCaptures per year
Monthly capture counts of a URL for every year it was archived, with its first and last capture.
- GET
/v1/searchSearch hosts
Hosts the Wayback Machine has archived that match a query.
Frequently asked questions about Wayback Machine API
Where does the data come from?
From the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine (web.archive.org). This API queries the public archive and returns its answers in a stable JSON shape.
How do I look up a page at a specific date?
Call GET /v1/content with url and date (YYYY-MM-DD or YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS, UTC). The archive returns the capture closest to that moment, with its exact timestamp in the date field.
What happens when a URL was never archived?
GET /v1/content answers 404 with content: null — a normal, charged answer meaning the archive has no capture of that URL.
Am I charged when a request fails?
No. If the Wayback Machine cannot be reached or rate-limits the request, the API answers 503 and the request is not charged. Only answers the archive actually returned are charged.
